Vriner's Confectionery was a famous candy shop in Champaign, Illinois. It was a special place where people could buy delicious sweets for almost 100 years!
The Story of Vriner's Candy Shop
The building where Vriner's Confectionery was located was built way back in 1890. At first, it was a clothing store. But in 1898, the Vriner family opened their candy shop there.
Vriner's was one of several candy stores in Champaign around that time. However, it became the most famous and stayed open the longest! It was in a great spot, right next to a vaudeville theater and close to the train station. This made it a popular stop for people going to shows or traveling.
The success of Vriner's also helped many Greek immigrants find jobs in Champaign. The Vriner family offered work to new people arriving in the area.
This historic building was recognized as important on May 9, 1983. It was added to a special list called the National Register of Historic Places.
Vriner's Confectionery closed its doors in 1997. Even though the store is no longer there, the Vriner family still makes candy! Today, a country music bar is located in the old building.
