A Sweet History
The building where Vriner's Confectionery was located was built in 1890. At first, it was a clothing store. But in 1898, Vriner's opened its doors and started selling candy.
There were several candy shops in Champaign around the year 1900. However, Vriner's was the one that stayed open the longest. It became a very popular spot in town.
Why Vriner's Was Popular
Vriner's Confectionery had a great location. It was right next to a vaudeville theater. Vaudeville was a type of entertainment show with different acts like music, comedy, and dancing. The candy shop was also close to Champaign's train station. Because of its location, many people going to the theater or traveling by train would stop by Vriner's.
A Place for New Beginnings
Vriner's Confectionery also played a role in helping Greek immigrants come to Champaign. The Vriner family offered jobs to many new immigrants. This helped them settle in the city and start new lives.
Becoming a Historic Place
On May 9, 1983, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it was recognized as an important historical site in the United States.
The candy store eventually closed in 1997. Even though the Vriner family still makes candy, they no longer have a permanent shop. Today, a country bar is located in the old Vriner's building.
