Walter Erskine, Earl of Mar and Kellie (1839–1888) facts for kids
Walter Henry Erskine (born December 17, 1839 – died September 16, 1888) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the titles of Earl of Mar and Earl of Kellie.
A Scottish Nobleman's Life
Walter Henry was the son of Walter Coningsby Erskine. When his father passed away in 1872, Walter Henry became the 13th Earl of Kellie. This meant he inherited his father's title and responsibilities.
Becoming the Earl of Mar
His father had been trying to claim another important title, the Earldom of Mar. This claim was still being decided when his father died. However, in 1875, Walter Henry's claim to the Earldom of Mar was officially recognized. This made him the Earl of Mar as well.
Things got a bit complicated in 1885. A special law was passed by the Parliament. This law changed how the Earldom of Mar was understood. It meant that Walter Henry was recognized as the 11th Earl of Mar, but for a specific, later creation of the title. At the same time, another person, John Goodeve-Erskine, was recognized as the 27th Earl of Mar for a much older creation of the title. So, from then on, there were two Earls of Mar at the same time!
