The Grants-Milan Flight Service Station is a special building located in Grants, New Mexico. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. This means it's an important historical site in the United States.

This station was built in 1953. Its main job was to help pilots flying in and out of the Grants-Milan Municipal Airport. It provided important information and guidance for safe flights. For a while, it was also part of the Western New Mexico Aviation Heritage Museum. This museum celebrates the brave pilots who flew early air routes.

What is a Flight Service Station?

A flight service station is like a control center for pilots. It gives them important information they need to fly safely. This includes weather updates, details about airports, and help with flight plans. These stations are super helpful, especially for smaller planes or flights in less busy areas. They make sure pilots have all the facts before they take off.

Western New Mexico Aviation Heritage Museum

The Western New Mexico Aviation Heritage Museum is a small museum. It is located right at the Grants-Milan airport (KGNT) in Grants, New Mexico. The museum officially opened on June 9, 2012. It helps us remember the early days of flying in this part of the country.

Honoring Early Aviation Pioneers

This museum celebrates the pilots who flew on the Los Angeles to Amarillo part of the Transcontinental Air Transport. This was one of the first companies to deliver air mail across the country. Imagine flying mail across long distances when planes were still quite new!

Historic Structures at the Museum

The museum has two important structures from 1929. One is a tall, 55-foot beacon tower. These towers had bright lights to guide pilots at night. The other is a small building that used to hold a generator. This generator powered the beacon light. There is also a concrete arrow on the ground. These arrows were huge signs that helped pilots flying low to find their way. They pointed in the correct direction for the next part of their journey.
