Wilhelm Schönmann (born April 7, 1889, died May 15, 1970) was a talented German chess player. He was known as a chess master, which means he was a very skilled player who competed in many important tournaments.

Early Chess Career

Wilhelm Schönmann started playing in chess tournaments early in his life. He showed great promise even when he was young.

Before World War I

  • In 1910, he played in a big tournament in Hamburg and finished in 8th or 9th place.
  • He did even better in Hamburg in 1913, where he shared 2nd place.
  • A very exciting moment for him was in 1914 in Hamburg. He won a special game against Emanuel Lasker, who was the World Chess Champion at the time! This was a "simultan game," where one strong player plays against many opponents at once.
  • Later in 1914, he took part in another major tournament in Mannheim.

After World War I

After World War I, Wilhelm Schönmann continued to play chess and achieved good results.

  • In 1920, he came in 2nd place at a tournament in Berlin.
  • He also finished 4th in Kiel in 1920.
  • In 1926, he shared 1st place in a tournament in Vienna.
  • He won a tournament in Lübeck in 1928.
  • In 1930, he shared 1st place again in Hamburg.
  • He took 2nd place in Hamburg in 1932, just behind another strong player named Herbert Heinicke.
  • In 1935, he played in the 3rd German Chess Championship in Aachen.

Representing Germany

Wilhelm Schönmann was so good at chess that he was chosen to play for his country, Germany.

  • He played in the 2nd unofficial Chess Olympiad in Budapest in 1926. This was like the Olympic Games for chess teams.
  • He also played in the official 2nd Chess Olympiad in The Hague in 1928.

Later Life and Chess Studies

After World War II, Wilhelm Schönmann continued his involvement with chess. He played in several international tournaments where players sent their moves by mail, known as "correspondence tournaments." He also created a few "chess studies" before 1910. A chess study is a special chess puzzle where you have to find the best way to win or draw from a specific position.
