William Brownlow (born 1683 – died August 27, 1739) was an important Anglo-Irish politician. This means he was a person of English and Irish background who worked in politics in Ireland during his time.

William Brownlow came from a well-known family. His father was Arthur Chamberlain Brownlow, and his mother was Jane Hartstonge. His father had actually changed his last name to Brownlow. He did this when he inherited land from his grandfather, Sir William Brownlow.

William Brownlow grew up in a family that was involved in public life. He received a good education. He studied at Trinity College Dublin, which is a famous university in Ireland.

Political Career

William Brownlow became a politician. In 1711, he was elected to the Irish House of Commons. This was like the parliament or main law-making group in Ireland at that time. He represented the area of County Armagh.

He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Armagh. This means he was chosen by the people to speak for them. He kept this important job for a long time. He was re-elected many times. He served as an MP until he passed away in 1739.

Family Life

William Brownlow married Lady Elizabeth Hamilton. Her father was James Hamilton, 6th Earl of Abercorn. William and Elizabeth had five children together. They had four daughters and one son. Their son, also named William, followed in his father's footsteps. He also became a Member of Parliament for Armagh later on.
