Winslow is the main downtown area of the city of Bainbridge Island, Washington. It was the original name of the entire city. The area was named after Winslow Hall, a shipbuilder. Winslow is located around its main street, Winslow Way. It covers about 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) and looks out over Eagle Harbor.

How Winslow Became Part of Bainbridge Island

For many years, Winslow was its own small city. It was officially started on August 9, 1947. The city of Winslow covered about 1.5-square-mile (3.9 km2).

On February 28, 1991, something big happened. After a vote in November 1990, Winslow decided to join with the rest of Bainbridge Island. This meant the city of Winslow now covered the whole island! For a few months, it was still called the city of Winslow. But on November 7, 1991, the name officially changed to the city of Bainbridge Island.

Exploring Winslow Way

Winslow Way is the main street in Winslow. It stretches for about ten city blocks. Along this street, you can find many local businesses. There's a bookstore where you can find new adventures. You can also visit several art galleries. And if you're hungry, there are many restaurants and bakeries to choose from!

At the east end of Winslow Way, you'll find the ferry terminal. From here, you can take a ferry boat. The ferry travels across the water to Seattle's Colman Dock. It's a great way to visit the big city!

Life in Winslow

In 2010, people living in Winslow had an average household income of about $42,000. This was less than half of the average income for the rest of Bainbridge Island, which was $94,000. It was also less than the average income for the whole country and the state of Washington.

More than half of the homes in Winslow were rented. This is different from the rest of the island, where only about 20% of homes were rented. These differences sometimes caused disagreements. These differences were especially noticeable when Winslow and the rest of the island decided to join together.
