Yolande of Aragon, Duchess of Calabria facts for kids
Yolanda of Aragon (born 1273 – died August 1302) was a princess from the Kingdom of Aragon. Her parents were Peter III of Aragon and Constance of Sicily. Yolanda married Robert of Naples. Even though her husband later became king, Yolanda never became the Queen of Naples because she passed away before he took the throne.
A Royal Marriage
Yolanda married Robert on March 23, 1297, in Rome. Robert was the third son of Charles II of Naples and Maria Arpad of Hungary. This marriage was part of an important agreement. Robert married Yolanda, and in return, Yolanda's brother, James II of Aragon, agreed to give up his claim to Sicily. This helped to end a long-running conflict.
After her wedding, Yolanda traveled to Naples. She was escorted by Robert's brother, Raymond Berengar of Andria.
Yolanda's Children
Yolanda and Robert had two sons:
- Charles (1298–1328) was their first son. He became the Duke of Calabria in 1309 and later served as the Viceroy of Naples in 1318. Charles was the father of Queen Joan I of Naples.
- Louis (1301–1310) was their second son.
Her Passing
Yolanda passed away in August 1302. In the same month, a peace treaty called the Peace of Caltabellotta was signed. This treaty officially ended a big war known as the War of the Vespers. Yolanda's husband, Robert, became the King of Naples seven years after her death. After Yolanda's passing, Robert married again to Sancha of Majorca, but they did not have any children together.
