The lilac hunter (scientific name: Zephyrogomphus lateralis) is a special type of dragonfly. It belongs to a family of dragonflies called Gomphidae. You can find this interesting insect living in streams and rivers in the southwestern part of Australia.

This dragonfly gets its name, "lilac hunter," because of a unique color it has. It's a medium-sized dragonfly, mostly dark brown. But it also has cool brown and cream patterns on its body. The most striking feature is a beautiful lilac (light purple) color on the sides of its body.

What is a Dragonfly?

Dragonflies are amazing insects that have been around for millions of years! They are known for their big, clear wings and their ability to fly very fast. They are often found near water, like ponds, lakes, and rivers.

Dragonfly Superpowers

Dragonflies are incredible flyers. They can hover in one spot, fly backward, and even turn in mid-air! They have huge eyes that help them see almost all around them. This makes them excellent hunters.

Where the Lilac Hunter Lives

The lilac hunter dragonfly makes its home in south-western Australia. It prefers to live near fresh water, like clean streams and rivers. These watery places are important for them to lay their eggs and for their young to grow.

Habitat Importance

Clean water is super important for dragonflies. The young dragonflies, called nymphs, live underwater. They need healthy streams and rivers to survive and find food. Protecting these water sources helps the lilac hunter and many other creatures.

Life Cycle of a Dragonfly

Dragonflies have a fascinating life cycle that involves both water and air. It's a bit like a transformation!

Egg Stage

The life of a lilac hunter starts as a tiny egg. The female dragonfly lays her eggs in or near the water. Sometimes she drops them directly into the water, or she might lay them on plants that are in the water.

Nymph Stage

Once the eggs hatch, a young dragonfly, called a nymph, comes out. Dragonfly nymphs live underwater. They are like underwater hunters themselves, eating small water insects and even tiny fish. They breathe using gills, just like fish! Nymphs can live underwater for months, or even years, depending on the species. As they grow, they shed their skin several times.

Adult Stage

When the nymph is ready to become an adult, it crawls out of the water onto a plant stem or rock. Its skin then splits open, and the adult dragonfly slowly emerges. Its wings unfold and dry, and soon it takes its first flight! The adult lilac hunter will then spend its time flying, hunting, and finding a mate to start the cycle all over again.

What Lilac Hunters Eat

Adult lilac hunters are skilled predators. They mostly eat other insects that they catch while flying.

Hunting Skills

They use their excellent eyesight and fast flying abilities to catch their prey in the air. Their diet often includes mosquitoes, flies, and other small flying insects. This makes them helpful to humans by controlling insect populations.
