Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ágatha Blumenthal, also known by her Spanish name Águeda Flores (born 1541 in Talagante – died August 1632 in Santiago), was a very important and wealthy woman in Chile during the 1500s and early 1600s. She was known for owning huge amounts of land.

Ágatha was of mixed heritage. Her father was Bartolomé Blumenthal, who came from Germany. Her mother was Princess Elvira of Talagante, an Inca princess and the daughter of a respected chief named Tala Canta Ilabe. Ágatha was also the grandmother of a famous figure in Chilean history, Catalina de los Ríos y Lisperguer.

A Powerful Landowner

Águeda Flores owned many large areas of land across Chile. These lands were in places like Talagante, Quilicura, Peñalolén, Cauquenes, and Putagán. Because she owned so much land, she became the richest woman in Chile during the colonial period. This was a time when Spain ruled Chile.

Her wealth and land ownership made her a very powerful and influential person in the society of that time.

Her Family Background

Ágatha's father, Bartholomeus Blumenthal Welzer, was from Germany. In Spanish, his name was Bartolomé Flores. He was an important person who traveled with Pedro de Valdivia during the Conquest of Chile. This was when Spanish explorers took control of the area that is now Chile.

Her mother, Elvira de Talagante, was an Inca princess. She was the daughter of Tala Canta Ilabe, a respected local chief. This mixed heritage connected Ágatha to both European and indigenous cultures.
