The Álamos Municipality is a special area in the southwestern part of Sonora, Mexico. It is like a county or district. This municipality is home to the beautiful town of Álamos.
Álamos Municipality is one of 72 such areas in the state of Sonora. It is located in the southeastern part of the state. The main town, Álamos, is known as a "Magical Town" because of its charm. Other important places in the municipality include San Bernardo and El Mocúzarit.
Some communities in Álamos Municipality are home to Guarijíos and Mayos indigenous peoples. These communities include Mesa Colorada and Bavícora.
History of Álamos Municipality
Becoming an Independent Area
Álamos Municipality became an independent area in 1813. This happened when Sonora was first divided into different political regions. Before this, the area was part of the Sinaloa province. This change was made possible by the Spanish Constitution of Cádiz. This important document helped shape how areas in Mexico were governed.
Size and Population
The Álamos Municipality is quite large. It covers an area of about 6,426 square kilometers (2,481 square miles). This makes it the sixth largest municipality in Sonora.
In 2020, a count of people living there was done. This count, called the Population and Housing Census, showed that about 24,976 people live in the municipality. Like many places in Sonora, the municipality is named after its main town, Álamos.
