Álvaro Caminha was an important figure in the early history of the Portuguese colony of São Tomé and Príncipe. He was chosen by King John II of Portugal to be the governor, or "Captain-major," of the island of São Tomé. This happened in 1492. The island had been discovered about 22 years before his arrival.
Álvaro Caminha's Mission
Álvaro Caminha was a knight who worked for the king. His main job was to settle the island of São Tomé. At that time, the island was mostly empty.
Settling the Island
King John II wanted São Tomé to become a thriving colony. To do this, Álvaro Caminha was told to bring his own family. He also brought friars, who were religious people.
He was also given a group of people to help settle the island. These were families who had faced difficulties in Spain. They were sent to São Tomé to start a new life. The king wanted them to help build up the new colony.
His Time as Governor
Álvaro Caminha served as Captain-major from July 29, 1493. He continued in this role until April 28, 1499. During his time, two kings ruled Portugal: King John II and later King Manuel I of Portugal.
He was the third governor of São Tomé. He worked to establish the colony and make it a place where people could live and work. Álvaro Caminha died on São Tomé Island in 1499.
