Ángel Maria Herrera (born December 3, 1859 – May 2, 1948) was an important Panamanian educator. He dedicated his life to teaching and improving schools in Panama.

A Life Dedicated to Education
Becoming a Teacher
Ángel Maria Herrera earned his teaching degree in 1884. He studied at the École Normale de Institutores. Right after graduating, he started teaching. He was appointed to the Boys' School of Saints. A year later, he became the Chief Academic at the Boys' School of St. Anne in Panama.
Leading Schools
Herrera quickly took on more responsibility. He became a 'Preceptor' (a type of teacher or tutor) in Penonomé. By 1897, he was the Director of the School of the College of the Isthmus. He also worked as an inspector for public education. He did this for several years in the provinces of Colon and Cocle. His parents were Don Braulio Herrera and Doña Luisa Tuñón.
His Lasting Legacy
Today, there is a school named after him in the District of Penonomé. It is called the 'Angel Maria Herrera' school. A few years ago, this school had a serious fire. The damages from the fire cost about $40,000.
