Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Æthelstan was an important Anglo-Saxon nobleman who lived and worked in England between about 940 and 970. He was a powerful leader, known as an Ealdorman, in the southern part of Mercia. This was a large area of England during the time of Kings Eadwig and Edgar.

Who Was Æthelstan?

Æthelstan was a key figure in Anglo-Saxon England. He was a nobleman, which meant he came from an important and wealthy family. He held a high position called an Ealdorman. An Ealdorman was like a powerful governor or a regional leader. They were in charge of a large area, making sure laws were followed and leading armies when needed.

A Powerful Nobleman

Æthelstan served as an Ealdorman in southern Mercia. Mercia was one of the main kingdoms in Anglo-Saxon England. He worked under two kings: King Eadwig and King Edgar. To help tell him apart from other important people named Æthelstan, he was sometimes called Æthelstan Rota. This nickname meant "Æthelstan the Red." There was another famous Æthelstan, known as Æthelstan Half-King, who was also an Ealdorman around the same time.

Family Connections

Æthelstan became very important during the time King Eadwig ruled. He married a very influential woman named Æthelflæd of Damerham. Æthelflæd was the second wife of King Edmund I, who was King Eadwig's father. This made her King Eadwig's stepmother. Æthelflæd was powerful not just because she had been a queen. Her own father, Ælfgar, was also a very important leader and an Ealdorman in Essex.

Where He Lived and Worked

It seems Æthelstan owned land in areas that are now known as Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. He was often present when important documents, called charters, were signed by Kings Eadwig and Edgar. Charters were official papers that recorded important decisions, land deals, or laws. His name appearing on so many of these documents shows how trusted and important he was to the kings.

A Mysterious Vision

A book called the Life of Saint Dunstan tells a story about a nobleman named Æthelstan. This Æthelstan had a strange vision, like a dream or a strong feeling. Saint Dunstan then explained that this vision meant the king would soon die and that difficult times were coming. We don't know for sure if this story is about Æthelstan Rota or the other famous Æthelstan, Æthelstan Half-King.
