ENSTA Bretagne is a famous engineering school in Brest, France. Its full name in French means "National Institute of Advanced Technologies of Brittany." It's one of the best engineering schools in France, especially for marine and naval engineering.

This school is special because it works closely with the French Ministry of Armed Forces. It's one of four engineering schools they oversee. ENSTA Bretagne is also known for its strong connection with École Polytechnique, another top school.

Every year, about 180 students become engineers here. Most students are civilians, but some train for the armed forces.

What is ENSTA Bretagne?

A School with a Long History

ENSTA Bretagne has a long and interesting history. It started way back in 1819 as a school for naval officers. Over the years, it changed names and locations. In 1971, it became ENSIETA. This new school brought together different engineering fields.

At first, the school mainly trained engineers for the French Ministry of Defense. But in 1988, it started welcoming civilian students too. More and more civilian students joined in the 1990s. In December 2010, ENSIETA changed its name to ENSTA Bretagne. It also became a founding member of the ENSTA Group.

Working Together with Other Schools

ENSTA Bretagne works closely with other important schools. For example, it has a special partnership with IMT Atlantique. This partnership helps students exchange between schools. It also helps with research, new ideas, and working with other countries. They want to create a top engineering center together.

How ENSTA Bretagne Connects with Others

ENSTA Bretagne is part of many important groups. It helps lead groups focused on marine energy and car technology. It's also a member of the Université Bretagne-Loire. Since 2010, it has been a founding member of the ENSTA Group. These connections help the school stay at the forefront of technology and research.

What Can You Study?

Becoming a General Engineer

Most students at ENSTA Bretagne study to become "general engineers." About 180 students join each year. Most of them are civilians, but some are military students. Their engineering degrees are recognized in Europe.

In the first year, all students learn general subjects. These include math, computer science, mechanics, and electronics. After the first year, students can choose from eight main subjects and 21 special areas. Some of these include:

  • Robotics
  • Naval architecture and offshore engineering
  • Hydrography and Oceanography (studying water and the sea floor)
  • Pyrotechnics Systems (the science of explosives and propellants)

Apprentice Engineers

Since 2006, ENSTA Bretagne has offered a program for apprentice engineers. This is a three-year course. Students can specialize in areas like:

  • Embedded Systems (computer systems inside other devices)
  • Vehicle Architecture
  • Naval Platforms (like ships and submarines)

Master's Degrees

After their first degree, students can get a Master's degree. These are advanced studies in specific fields. Some Master's programs include:

  • International Master of Automobile Engineering
  • Master of Maritime Engineering
  • Master of Mobile Robotics – Application in Marine Robotics

Advanced Master's Degrees

These are even more specialized courses. They are for students who have already completed a long period of study. Some options are:

  • Pyrotechnics and Propulsion
  • Specialist in Renewable Marine Energies (like wind or wave power)
  • Maritime Project Management

PhD Programs

Every year, about 100 students work on their PhDs at ENSTA Bretagne. A PhD is the highest university degree. Students do deep research in different departments.

Student Life

Life at ENSTA Bretagne is not just about studying! Students have many activities to choose from. The student union organizes events like:

  • Sports competitions
  • Music and theater shows
  • Parties and galas
  • Welcoming events for new students

The student sports union offers many sports. Students can play rugby, handball, volleyball, football, basketball, and more. They can also go swimming, fencing, or sailing. The school has good facilities for these activities. ENSTA Bretagne students also take part in sports tournaments with other engineering schools.

Research at ENSTA Bretagne

Research is a very important part of ENSTA Bretagne. It helps students learn the latest scientific knowledge. The school's research aims to:

  • Discover new things in their fields of study.
  • Help industries and the Ministry of Armed Forces with their needs.
  • Give students excellent scientific training.

ENSTA Bretagne also works with big companies like Thales and Naval Group on research projects.

Mechanics Department

This department studies how things move and how materials behave. They work with companies that make cars, energy systems, and ships. They also study how things interact with the marine environment.

Information and Communication Science and Technology Department

This department focuses on computer science, technology, and knowledge. Many researchers from different schools work together here. ENSTA Bretagne is a major contributor to this research.

Social and Human Sciences Department

This department studies engineers themselves. They look at how engineers learn and grow in their jobs. They also think about the social and ethical questions related to engineering work.
