Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Élisabeth Thible, also known as Elizabeth Tible, was a brave woman from Lyon, France. She made history as the first woman to fly in a hot air balloon that wasn't tied down! This amazing flight happened on June 4, 1784. It was just eight months after the very first balloon flight with people on board. Élisabeth flew with Mr. Fleurant in a balloon named La Gustave. It was named to honor King Gustav III of Sweden, who was visiting Lyon.

Élisabeth Thible's Historic Flight

Mr. Fleurant was supposed to fly with Count Jean-Baptiste de Laurencin. But the Count kindly gave his spot on The Gustave to Élisabeth Thible.

When the balloon lifted off the ground, Élisabeth was dressed like the Roman goddess Minerva. She and Mr. Fleurant sang two songs together. These songs were from La Belle Arsène, a very popular opera at that time.

Their flight lasted for 45 minutes. They traveled about four kilometers and reached an amazing height. Experts believe they went as high as 1,500 meters! King Gustav III of Sweden watched the flight. The balloon was named La Gustave in his honor.

The landing was a bit bumpy. Élisabeth twisted her ankle when the basket touched the ground. Mr. Fleurant gave her a lot of credit for the flight's success. He said she was very brave. She also helped by feeding the balloon's fire box during the journey.
