Éric René Boullier (born 9 November 1973) is a French engineer and manager in motor racing. He is well-known for his important roles in Formula One (F1). From 2014 to 2018, he was the racing director for the McLaren F1 Team. Before that, he led the Lotus F1 team as its team principal from 2010 to 2013. He also served as a vice chairman for the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA).

Éric Boullier's Early Career

Éric Boullier studied engineering at the French Institut Polytechnique des Sciences Avancées. He focused on aeronautical and spacecraft engineering. This means he learned how to design airplanes and spaceships.

In 2002, he started working as a chief engineer for the Spanish team Racing Engineering. He was in charge of their racing program called World Series by Nissan.

A year later, in 2003, he moved to the French team DAMS. There, he became the managing and technical director. This role included working with the A1 Team France racing group.

Leading Racing Teams

At the end of 2008, Boullier became the CEO of Gravity Sport Management. In this job, he helped many young racing drivers. Some of these drivers included Ho-Pin Tung and Jérôme d'Ambrosio.

Joining Formula One

In 2010, the Renault F1 team got new owners. One of the main people behind this was Gerard Lopez. On January 5, 2010, Éric Boullier was announced as the new team principal. This was a big step, as he had never worked in Formula One before.

Under his leadership, the Renault F1 team finished fifth in the World Constructors' Championship in 2010. The team was later renamed Lotus Renault GP. They finished fifth again in 2011. For 2012 and 2013, the team was known as Lotus F1 Team, and Boullier continued as their leader.

Moving to McLaren

On January 24, 2014, Boullier left his role at Lotus F1 Team. Just five days later, on January 29, 2014, he joined the McLaren Formula One racing team. He became their racing director. He worked under Ron Dennis, who was the chairman of McLaren Group. This change was part of a big update to McLaren's racing management.

Boullier stayed at McLaren Racing until July 4, 2018, when he announced his resignation.

Current Role

In February 2019, Éric Boullier joined the organization for the French Grand Prix. He became an advisor and ambassador for sports and operations. In January 2020, he was named the managing director for the French Grand Prix.
