Ónavas is a small town located in the southeast of the Mexican state of Sonora. It is part of the Onavas Municipality.

What's in a Name?
The name Ónavas comes from the Cahita language. It means "salty water."
Ónavas has a long history. It was founded in 1622 as a mission called Mission San Ignacio de Loyola de Ónavas. Two Jesuit missionaries, Diego Vandersipe and Blas Paredes, started the mission.
Geography and Climate
Ónavas is located in a region with interesting weather patterns. The climate here can be quite warm, especially in the summer months.
The town experiences hot temperatures, with the highest temperatures often reaching over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer. Even the average daily temperatures are warm throughout the year. Winters are milder, but it can still get quite cold at night.
Rainfall mostly happens during the summer, especially in July and August. The rest of the year is usually much drier.

The people of Ónavas mainly work in two areas: farming and raising cattle.
In 2000, about 2,227 hectares (or about 5,500 acres) of land were used for farming. Most of this land was not watered by irrigation systems. The main crops grown here include alfalfa, beans, and corn. Farmers also grow plants to feed their cattle. Sonora Turismo
Cattle Raising
Raising cattle is a very important job in Ónavas. In 2000, about 60% of the people who worked in the town were involved in cattle raising. There were about 6,614 cattle in the area at that time. Sonora Turismo
