Discover the Ōhinemahuta River

The Ōhinemahuta River is an important part of the natural landscape in the Marlborough area. It helps shape the land as it flows towards the larger Wairau River. Rivers like this are vital for the environment, supporting local plants and animals.

Its Journey Through Marlborough

The river's path is interesting because it changes direction. It begins by flowing towards the northeast. Then, it makes a turn and starts flowing southeast. This journey ends when it meets the Wairau River, which is a much bigger river in the region. The area around the river is known for its beautiful scenery and natural features.

Why the Name Changed

The name of the river was officially changed in August 2014. Before that, it was called the Onamalutu River. The old name, Onamalutu, was actually a slightly changed version of Ōhinemahuta.

The name Ōhinemahuta has a special meaning. It refers to a place where a very important ancestor named Hine Mahuta once lived. Hine Mahuta was an ancestor of the Rangitāne and Ngāti Mamoe people, who are Māori iwi (tribes) of New Zealand. This name change helps to honor the history and culture of the local Māori people.
