The Ōtaki Museum is a special place in Ōtaki. It helps keep the history of Ōtaki safe and shares it with everyone. The museum is located inside an old building that used to be a bank. Its main goal is to save and share the interesting stories from Ōtaki's past.

Discovering the Museum's Home

The Ōtaki Museum is in a cool old building at 49 Main Street in Ōtaki. This building has two floors and is made of concrete. Inside, you can see shiny wooden floors and ceilings made of pressed steel.

A Building with a Past

The building was first built in 1918 for the Bank of New Zealand. A famous architect named John Mair helped design it. Later, in 1965, the local council bought the building. It became the main office for the Ōtaki Borough Council. This lasted until 1989, when Ōtaki joined the Kāpiti Coast District Council.

How the Museum Started

In 2003, a group called the Otaki Heritage Bank Preservation Trust was formed. Their big idea was to collect, save, and share Ōtaki's history. They planned to do this through different exhibitions. These shows would feature stories, pictures, and old items. The Trust officially became a charity on June 30, 2008.

The Museum Opens Its Doors

The Kāpiti Coast District Council leased the old bank building to the Trust in 2003. Since then, the Ōtaki Museum has been open in this historic spot. It has been sharing Ōtaki's heritage for many years.

What the Museum Collects

The Ōtaki Museum has many interesting items in its collections. These collections help tell the story of the area.

  • Records from local groups, like the Ōtaki Borough Council.
  • Old papers and documents about Ōtaki's history.
  • The Small Collection, which holds special items.
  • The Wallace Collection, another important group of historical objects.

The Otaki Historical Society

The Ōtaki Museum also keeps the records and collections of the Otaki Historical Society. This means that even more of Ōtaki's history is kept safe and available for people to learn from.
