Where is 110 Tower Located?
110 Tower is in a part of Fort Lauderdale called the Justice District. It is right next to the Broward County Courthouse. The building is also near the Broward County jail. It sits along 6th Street in the city.
How 110 Tower Faced a Hurricane
In October 2005, a big storm called Hurricane Wilma hit South Florida. The hurricane caused some damage to 110 Tower. Several windows on the building were broken.
The strong winds also blew off the blue neon lights from the top of the building. These lights used to outline the building at night. In 2010, new LED lights were put in their place. These new lights can change colors and make the building look very bright.
A Big Renovation for 110 Tower
After the hurricane, the main company that used the building, AutoNation, moved out in 2010. This left half of the building empty. The owners saw this as a chance to make big improvements.
They started a huge $31 million project to update the building. This included fixing the heating, cooling, and air systems. They also made the common areas look new. Many floors were completely redone. Old electrical and water systems were replaced with modern, eco-friendly ones.
110 Tower Becomes a Green Building
Thanks to these updates, 110 Tower became a "green" building. In 2011, it earned the Energy Star Rating. This means it uses energy very efficiently. It also received the LEED EB Gold award from the U.S. Green Building Council. This award shows that the building is very environmentally friendly.
In 2011, 110 Tower was even named "LEED E.B. Gold Building of the Year." The city of Fort Lauderdale also celebrated its efforts. They declared Thursday, September 7, 2011, as "110 Tower Day." These improvements have helped make downtown Fort Lauderdale better. New projects like a new courthouse and a planned train line will also help the area grow.
