Discovering the Dorris Motor Car Building
This special building is located at 4059 – 4065 Forest Park Avenue in the Central West End area of St. Louis. It started as a factory and a big storage place for industrial goods. When it was first built in 1907, it had two stories. Just two years later, in 1909, a third story was added to make it even bigger.
A Factory for Early Cars
From 1907 until 1926, this building was the main office and factory for the Dorris Motor Car Company. This company was very important for St. Louis. It helped the city become a major center for putting cars together and making car parts. Imagine cars being built right inside these walls over 100 years ago!
What Happened After the Cars?
In 1926, the Dorris Motor Car Company closed down. But the building didn't stay empty for long. For many years, it was used as a shoe factory by the Brauer Brothers Manufacturing Company. After they moved out, a furniture store used the space to sell its products.
A New Life for the Old Building
Then, the building sat empty for several years. But in 2004, it got a big makeover! It was renovated to become the home of the Center for Emerging Technologies. This center helps new startup companies grow. Today, it's known as the CIC@CET, and the building is still being updated for their continued use.
Why is This Building Special?
The 1907 Dorris Motor Car Company Building is important because it shows a key part of St. Louis's history. It reminds us of a time when the city was a leader in making cars.
