The 1964 Atlantic hurricane season was a period when tropical storms and hurricanes formed in the Atlantic Ocean. It officially started on June 2, 1964, and ended on November 10, 1964. During this season, 12 tropical storms formed. Out of these, 6 became strong hurricanes, known as "major hurricanes."

Some of the most well-known hurricanes from this season were Hurricane Cleo, Hurricane Dora, and Hurricane Hilda. These storms caused a lot of damage and were remembered for their strength.

What Is a Hurricane Season?

A hurricane season is a time each year when most tropical storms and hurricanes are expected to form. In the Atlantic Ocean, this period usually runs from June 1 to November 30. The 1964 season was a bit shorter than this, but it still saw many powerful storms.

Storms of 1964

During the 1964 Atlantic hurricane season, 12 tropical storms formed. Six of these storms grew strong enough to be called major hurricanes. Here is a list of the storms that formed:

  • Tropical Storm One
  • Tropical Storm Two
  • Tropical Storm Abby
  • Tropical Storm Brenda
  • Hurricane Cleo
  • Hurricane Dora
  • Hurricane Ethel
  • Tropical Storm Florence
  • Hurricane Gladys
  • Hurricane Hilda
  • Hurricane Isbell
  • Tropical Storm Twelve

How Storms Get Their Names

Tropical storms and hurricanes are given names to make them easier to identify and track. This helps people know which storm is being talked about, especially when there are many storms at once.

Naming the 1964 Storms

The names used for storms in the North Atlantic in 1964 were:

  • Abby
  • Brenda
  • Cleo
  • Dora
  • Ethel
  • Florence
  • Gladys
  • Hilda
  • Isbell

The name Isbell was used for the very first time in 1964. Other names like Janet, Katy, Lila, Molly, Nita, Odette, Paula, Roxie, Stella, Trudy, Vesta, and Wesley were ready to be used but were not needed because not enough storms formed.

Retired Storm Names

Sometimes, if a hurricane causes a lot of damage or deaths, its name is "retired." This means the name will never be used again for another storm in the Atlantic. This is done out of respect for the victims and to avoid confusion.

After the 1964 season, the names Cleo, Dora, and Hilda were retired because they were very destructive. In later years, new names like Candy, Dolly, and Hannah were used instead of Cleo, Dora, and Hilda.
