1 New York Street facts for kids
1 New York Street is a tall office building located in the busy city of Manchester, England. It was designed by a well-known group of architects called Denton Corker Marshall. The building stands on Mosley Street, right across from another interesting building at 38 and 42 Mosley Street. It officially opened its doors in 2009. One of its first and main tenants was a big financial company called Bank of New York Mellon.
Design and Features
This building has a very modern and unique look. Its design includes two parts that look like glass and metal 'boxes'. These boxes seem to stick out from the main part of the building. The outside of the building, called the facade, is covered with glass and aluminium. This gives it a strong and special appearance in the city.
Building in the city centre can be tricky. The location of 1 New York Street had some challenges. There are tram lines right next to the road, and tunnels run underneath the building. To make sure the construction didn't disturb the tram lines or the area around it, the builders used the existing basement structure. They also added new strong foundations deep into the ground.
1 New York Street is special because it was the first office building in central Manchester built without a specific tenant in mind (this is called 'speculative'). It also received a BREEAM 'excellent' rating. BREEAM is a way to measure how environmentally friendly a building is. An 'excellent' rating means it's very good for the environment!
