The Twentieth Century Club and Its Historic Building

How the Club Began

The Twentieth Century Club started in 1894. Its motto was about helping the community. Mrs. Walter McNab Miller was the first President. The club began with 84 women. They chose the name to look forward to the new century.

In 1894, the club members started a library. People could borrow books from it. In 1898, they gave money for a scholarship. This scholarship helped a student go to the University of Nevada. In 1901, they helped create the Kindergarten Association. They also asked the government to start public kindergartens. During war times, members spent many hours helping the country.

A Special Building

In 1925, the club built its own Clubhouse. It was located on First Street by the river. Roush and Belz built it. The Clubhouse was a source of great pride for its members. Many social events in Reno happened there. These included weddings, lunches, and dinner dances. Civic meetings were also held in the building.

Before 1930, the club worked on many important causes. They helped pass rules for public health. They also supported education and community spirit. At one point, the club had about 1,000 members.

In 1980, the Twentieth Century Club sold the building. They also gave their special Steinway grand piano to the Reno Philharmonic orchestra.

Helping the Community Today

Since 1986, the club has given two scholarships. These scholarships go to female students. They must be interested in studying medicine. Each scholarship is currently $2,500.

The club also donates a lot of money each year. They give $20,000 to local charities. They also plan special projects to help others. These projects happen at their club meetings.

The club holds a luncheon every month. These lunches are from September to May. They often feature music or guest speakers. The Twentieth Century Club is now in its third century. It is still the oldest active women's club in Nevada.

The Historic 20th Century Building

The old Twentieth Century Clubhouse is now called the 20th Century Building. It is still standing today. You can find it at 335 W. First St. This building is very historic. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The famous architect Fred M. Schadler designed the building. It shows two different styles of architecture. These are Classical Revival and Prairie School. It was built in 1925.

The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It was important for two reasons. First, it was an "interesting" building. It was designed by a well-known local architect. Second, it was connected to the Twentieth Century Club. This club was "prominent and important" in Reno.
