3D television facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A 3D television (or 3D TV) makes a normal flat screen look like its picture has depth, just like the real world. It does this by showing you two slightly different images at the same time. Your brain then puts these two images together to create the feeling of three dimensions.

How 3D TVs Work

Most 3D TVs you might have seen use special glasses to create the 3D effect. These are called stereoscopic 3D displays. The glasses help separate the two images the TV is showing, so each of your eyes sees a slightly different picture. Your brain then combines these pictures into one 3D view.

There are also autostereoscopic 3D displays, which let you see 3D without needing glasses. However, these are not as common for home TVs. Most 3D TVs sold in stores use glasses.

What You Can Do with a 3D TV

A 3D TV can do everything a regular 2D TV can do. Some newer 3D TVs can even try to turn a normal 2D movie into a 3D one, but the quality isn't usually very good.

Finding movies and shows made especially in 3D can sometimes be hard. Not many new movies are released in 3D format for home viewing anymore.

Getting the Best 3D View

To get the best 3D effect, it's often better to watch on a larger TV screen. Also, sitting closer to the screen can make the 3D effect stronger. Watching 3D content can sometimes be a bit harder for your brain to process, so it's a good idea to sit down while watching.
