5th Division (Norway) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The 5th Division was a military group in the Norwegian Army. It existed from 1916 until 1940, when World War II reached Norway. This division was in charge of protecting the areas of Romsdal and Trøndelag in Norway.

Soldiers from the 5th Division took part in important battles during the Norwegian Campaign. These battles happened in places like Dombås, Andalsnes, and Namsos. The person leading the division was named Jacob Ager Laurantzon.

What Was the 5th Division?

The 5th Division started out as the 5th Brigade in 1911. A "brigade" is a smaller military unit. In 1916, it changed its name to the 5th Division, becoming a larger group. It was the main military organization for the Norwegian Army in the Møre og Romsdal and Trøndelag regions from 1911 to 1940.

The Division During World War II

When Germany invaded Norway on April 9, 1940, the commander of the 5th Division, Jacob Ager Laurantzon, gave some surprising orders. He told his troops not to fight against the German soldiers. He also wanted to meet with the German commander in Trondheim.

However, other important people stopped this from happening. The county governor, Håkon Five, along with Colonels Getz and Wettre, made sure Laurantzon was removed from his leadership role on April 27. This was a very important decision for the division.

Fighting at Dombås

Before the German invasion, parts of the 5th Division were stationed at Andalsnes. These included the 1st and 2nd Battalions of Infantry Regiment 11. These brave soldiers fought against the German 7th Flieger Division during the Battle of Dombås. This battle took place from April 14 to April 19, 1940. It was a tough fight where the Norwegian soldiers tried to defend their country.
