A. Zerega's Sons, Inc. was a very old company in the United States that made pasta. It was the first company to make pasta in the country! It started way back in 1848 in Brooklyn, New York. Later, it moved its main factory to Fair Lawn, New Jersey.
A Pioneer Pasta Company
This company was special because it was the very first one in the United States to make pasta. Imagine, back in 1848, most people didn't eat pasta like we do today! A. Zerega's Sons helped make pasta a popular food across the country. They had factories in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, and Lee's Summit, Missouri.
A Long History
The company was started by a man named Antoine Zerega. He began making pasta in Brooklyn, New York, in 1848. His son, Frank Zerega, also became a pasta maker. Frank worked in the business for an amazing 83 years and even became the company's president!
The Zerega family was quite important in New York. A street in the Bronx called Zerega Avenue was named after Antoine. Even an elevated train station on the New York City Subway's Pelham Line carries his name. The company stayed in Brooklyn for a long time. In 1952, it moved its main operations from Brooklyn to Fair Lawn, New Jersey.
What Happened to Zerega's?
After many years as a family-owned business, A. Zerega's Sons was sold. In May 2020, it was announced that another family-owned company, Philadelphia Macaroni, bought Zerega's. Philadelphia Macaroni is also a very old company, run by the fifth generation of its founding family.
