A is for Activist is a very popular children's alphabet board book. It was written and illustrated by Innosanto Nagara. This was his first book! He first created it for his own kids. He wanted a book that was both fun to learn from and taught about important ideas like fairness and helping others. After friends loved it and a Kickstarter campaign helped, it was published by Triangle Square.

How the Book Was Made

Why A is for Activist Was Written

Innosanto Nagara is very involved in helping people and making the world a better place. He wrote A is for Activist for his son. He felt there wasn't a good alphabet book that taught about being an activist. He wanted a book that supported ideas like fairness for everyone. He also wanted it to teach about working together and celebrating different cultures.

From Idea to Publication

After Nagara wrote the book, his friends really liked it. They suggested he publish more copies. Printing many copies of a board book can be expensive. So, Nagara started a special online fundraising campaign called Kickstarter. He raised enough money to print 3,000 copies of the book.

He packed all the books himself at home. Then, he sent them out through the post office. Even though it was just him doing all the work, he sold all 3,000 books very quickly.

Finding a Publisher

Nagara then showed his book to different small publishers. Many of them were unsure about the cost of printing. They also weren't used to publishing board books. Finally, he found a publisher called Triangle Square. This company is part of Seven Stories Press.

The book has been printed many times since then. Seven Stories also has a Spanish-language company called Siete Cuentos. They published a Spanish version of the book in 2014. A musician named Martha Gonzalez translated it. There is also an audiobook version available for free online. It is read by the famous guitarist and activist Tom Morello.
