The Abbott abarema (scientific name: Abarema abbottii) is a special type of plant that belongs to the Fabaceae family. This family is also known as the pea or bean family. This tree is quite rare because you can only find it in one country: the Dominican Republic. It grows in forests with wide-leaved trees, especially where the soil is made of limestone.
What Does It Look Like?
The Abbott abarema is a perennial plant, which means it lives for many years, not just one season. This tree can grow to be quite tall, usually between 4 and 12 metres high. That's like a building with one to three floors! It has bark that feels rough and is grey in colour.
Where Does It Live?
The Abbott abarema is only found in a specific part of the Dominican Republic. You can see it on the southern coast of Samana Bay and stretching west towards a place called Sa Quita-espuela.
This tree prefers to live in broad-leaved woodlands, which are forests with trees that have wide leaves. It especially likes areas where the soil is made of limestone. It can grow in these places at heights up to 800 metres above sea level.
