Abdullah bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani (Arabic: عبد الله بن حمد آل ثاني) was born on February 9, 1988, in Doha, Qatar. He holds an important position as the Deputy Emir of Qatar. This means he is like a second-in-command to the Emir, who is the ruler of the country. He is also seen as the unofficial person who might take over the throne in the future.
Early Life and School
Sheikh Abdullah is a son of the former ruler of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. His mother is Sheikha Noora bint Khalid Al Thani.
He went to Georgetown University and finished his studies in 2010. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Foreign Service.
On November 11, 2014, the current Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, chose his younger half-brother Abdullah to be the Deputy Emir. This made him unofficially next in line to the throne of Qatar. However, Emir Tamim is expected to choose one of his own sons to be the crown prince someday.
Family Life
Sheikh Abdullah got married to Sheikha Al Maha bint Muhammad Al Attiyah on March 22, 2012. Their wedding took place at Al Wajbah Palace.
Sheikha Al Maha studied at the Qatar University College of Engineering and Computer Science. Her father is Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, who is an important official in Qatar.
Sheikh Abdullah and Sheikha Al Maha have two sons:
- Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Hamad Al Thani
- Sheikh Tamim bin Abdullah Al Hamad Al Thani
Important Roles
Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad holds several key positions in Qatar:
- Since 2018, he has been the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for QatarEnergy. This is a big energy company in Qatar.
- He is also the Chairman of the Board of Regents for Qatar University. This means he helps lead the university.
- He serves as the Vice-chairman of the Supreme Council for Economic Affairs and Investment. This council makes important decisions about Qatar's economy and investments.
