Aberafan Centre facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Aberafan Shopping Centre is a popular indoor shopping mall located in Port Talbot, Wales. It's the only one of its kind in the town! This shopping centre has a huge space, about 24,100 square metres (or 259,410 square feet), and is home to over sixty shops spread across two levels. It also has the main library for Port Talbot.

The centre was built in the 1970s. It was updated in the late 1990s to make it more modern. Before the shopping centre, this area was part of the old town centre. Many buildings were taken down between 1971 and 1976 to make way for a part of the M4 motorway.

When the Aberafan Shopping Centre first opened, it had a special market area. Local traders used to sell their goods there. This new market replaced an older covered market that had been around since 1848! The town's library also moved into the shopping centre in 1997.
