History of Abingdon
Abingdon was founded in August 1849 by a person named Colonel Thomas McCollough. He named the community after Abingdon, Virginia. For a while, people also informally called the area "Bogus." This nickname came about because one of the early settlers was said to have been involved in making fake money.
Over the years, the number of people living in Abingdon has changed. In 1902, about 306 people lived there. By 1925, the population was around 300. It dropped to 60 people in 1940, but then grew again to 140 residents by 1960.
