The Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80 (1879) is a famous piece of music for an orchestra. It was written by the German composer Johannes Brahms. Brahms created this overture to thank the University of Breslau in Poland. They had given him a special honorary doctorate degree on March 11, 1879. Brahms himself conducted the very first performance of this music in Breslau in 1881.

What is the Academic Festival Overture?

This overture is a single piece of music, often played at the start of a concert. It is one of Brahms's 14 orchestral works. This particular piece uses the largest orchestra out of all of them. The music is written in a special way called "modified sonata form". This is a common structure for many classical music pieces.

What Makes This Overture Special?

A fun fact about the Academic Festival Overture is that it uses parts of four old student songs. These songs were popular among university students in Brahms's time. Brahms wove these familiar tunes into his grand orchestral work. This makes the overture sound both serious and playful at the same time.
