Ada Buisson, c. 1866

Ada Buisson (born March 26, 1839 – died December 27, 1866) was an English writer. She is best known today for her exciting ghost stories.

About Ada Buisson

Ada Buisson was born in Battersea, a town in Surrey, England. She was the third child of Jean François Buisson, a merchant from France, and Dorothy Jane Smither, his English wife. Ada had an older sister named Leontine. Leontine later became a teacher and worked hard to help women get better rights in Queensland, Australia.

When Ada was young, her family faced some money problems. Around 1850, Ada and her family moved to Brighton. Sadly, her mother passed away there in 1852. From 1854 to 1855, Ada and her sisters, Leontine and Irma, studied at Bedford College in London. This college was only for women. They learned about subjects like Moral Philosophy and Natural History.

Ada Buisson died in 1866 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. She was only 27 years old.

Ada Buisson's Writings

During her short life, Ada Buisson published one novel called Put to the Test in 1865. It was published by John Maxwell. After she passed away, more of her work was published. This included a second novel, A Terrible Wrong: A Novel (1867), and several short stories.

Many of her stories appeared in a magazine called Belgravia. This magazine was edited by her friend, the novelist Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Ada met Mary through Mary's husband, John Maxwell, who was also Ada's publisher. For a while, some people mistakenly thought Mary Elizabeth Braddon wrote Ada's stories.

One of Ada Buisson's most famous stories is "The Ghost's Summons." It was published after she died in Belgravia magazine in January 1868. This story has been included in many collections of ghost stories. In 2022, a collection of all five of her ghost stories was published. It was called The Baron's Coffin and Other Disquieting Tales.
