Adalbert Krieger Vasena: Economy Minister
As Minister of Economy, Adalbert Krieger Vasena made several big changes. He ordered a freeze on wages, meaning salaries could not increase. He also made the Argentine currency worth less compared to other currencies. This is called a devaluation.
Changes to the Economy
These changes made the economy weaker, especially for farmers. They also made it easier for foreign businesses to invest in Argentina. Vasena stopped agreements that protected workers' rights to negotiate their pay and conditions. These agreements are known as collective labor conventions.
New Laws and Rules
He also changed a law about oil. This law had given the state-owned oil company, Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF), a special position. Vasena's changes made it easier for other companies to operate. He also passed a law that made it simpler for landlords to remove tenants who did not pay their rent.
Finally, the right for workers to go on strike was stopped by a new law (Law 16,936). Other laws were also passed that changed earlier rules that helped workers. For example, some laws reduced the age at which people could retire.
