The Adams Apartment Building is a special old building in Springfield, Massachusetts. It has eight apartments and was built a long time ago, in 1912. It's a great example of a building style called Classical Revival. This building was hurt badly by a tornado in 2011. But it was fixed up and looks good again! Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

About the Adams Apartment Building

The Adams Apartment Building is in a neighborhood called the South End of Springfield. It's on Adams Street, between Richelieu Road and Dwight Street Extension. This building is four stories tall. It's made of strong brick and has a flat roof.

What Does It Look Like?

The building has a fancy style called Classical Revival. The front of the building has rounded sections on each side. In the middle, there's an entrance with a small porch supported by decorative brackets. The front is made of shiny red brick. The sides of the building use regular brick.

At the back, there are modern wooden porches stacked up. Inside, each floor has two apartments. They have a living area in the middle and bedrooms at the front and back. Many doors and windows have been replaced. But some of the original decorative wood trim is still there. The main entrance lobby has its original marble floor. The central staircase still has its old railing, even though the steps were rebuilt to be safer.

Its History and Restoration

The Adams Apartment Building was built in 1912. A builder named Pierre Angers constructed it for $13,500. At that time, many brick apartment buildings were being built in Springfield. Many of these were for or by French Canadian immigrants. Pierre Angers was one of these immigrants. He built many large homes and apartment buildings in the city.

In 2011, a tornado hit Springfield. The Adams Apartment Building was badly damaged. It lost its roof, and a lot of water got inside. After the tornado, the building was carefully repaired. It was restored to its original historic look.
