About the Addison Community Baptist Church
What Does It Look Like?
The Addison Community Baptist Church is located in the village center of Addison. You can find it on the west side of Vermont Route 22A. It stands just south of the Addison Town Hall.
The church is made of wood and has one main floor. It has a pointed roof, which is called a gabled roof. The outside walls are covered with horizontal wooden boards called clapboards.
The building has a classic design. The front and sides have flat, column-like decorations called pilasters. These pilasters make the building look grand and organized. A decorative band, known as an entablature, goes all around the building just below the roof.
A tall, square tower rises from the front of the roof. The bottom part of the tower is plain. It even has a special panel that shows when the church was built. Above this, there's a smaller section called a belfry. This is where church bells would usually be. The belfry has pilasters at its corners and openings with slats, called louvers.
On top of the belfry, there's an eight-sided steeple that ends in a sharp point, or spire. The front of the church is quite simple. It has a main entrance that is set back into the building. Above the doorway, you can see two windows.
Inside the church, you can still see the original box pews. These are like individual seating areas with high backs and sides. Columns that used to hold up the church's balcony are now used in the basement. The basement is where the vestry, a room for church meetings, is located.
A Look Back in Time: Its History
The Baptist community in Addison first came together in 1797. They decided to build this church, and it was finished in 1816. This makes it one of the oldest Baptist churches in Vermont.
In 1849, the church building got a big makeover. This is when many of its Greek Revival style features were added. Since then, not much has changed. The church has been updated with electricity and modern plumbing. A small addition was also built at the back of the church in 1962.
