Exploring the Church's Design and Past
The Addison Community Baptist Church stands right next to the Addison Town Hall. It is on the west side of Vermont Route 22A. This is just south of where Route 22A meets Vermont Route 17.
What the Church Looks Like
The church is a single-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with clapboards. The building is three sections wide and three sections deep. The front and sides have flat, column-like decorations called pilasters.
A decorative band, called an entablature, goes around the building below the roof. A square tower rises from the front part of the roof. The bottom part of the tower is plain. It has a panel on the front that shows the year the church was built.
Above this, there is another entablature and a cornice (a decorative molding). Then, a smaller belfry (bell tower) section rises up. This part is also square. It has pilasters at its corners and openings with slats for sound. An eight-sided steeple sits on top of the belfry, ending in a sharp point.
The front of the church is quite simple. It has two plain sections on the sides. These sections are next to a central part that sticks out. The main entrance is set back into this central part. Above the doorway, there are two windows. Inside the church, you can still see the original box pews. These are like small, enclosed seating areas.
A Look at the Church's History
The Baptist group in Addison started in 1797. They decided to build this church in 1816. In 1849, the church building was greatly updated. This is when its Greek Revival style was added.
Since then, only a few changes have been made. The church now has electricity and modern plumbing. In 1962, a small addition was built onto the back of the church.
