Adela Emilia Ringuelet (born March 27, 1930 – died April 26, 2023) was a brilliant Argentinian scientist. She was an astrophysicist and an astronomer. This means she studied stars, galaxies, and the universe! She worked at the Félix Aguilar Observatory in Argentina, which is a special place where scientists observe the sky.
She helped create the Argentinian Astronomical Association (Spanish: Asociación Argentina de Astronomía). She was also an active member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). This is a big group of astronomers from all over the world! Her work included over 100 scientific papers about stellar spectroscopy. This is a way to study the light from stars to learn what they are made of and how they move.
Life and Work
Adela was born in La Plata, Argentina. She loved studying astronomy at the Escuela Superior de Astronomía y Geofísica. She studied alongside her friends Nora Schreiber and Elsa Guttierez.
In 1958, she started working at the Félix Aguilar Observatory. Adela was married to another famous Argentinian astrophysicist, Jorge Sahade (1915–2012). He was a director of important observatories in Argentina. Adela and Jorge often worked together and published scientific papers about studying stars.
Her Legacy
Adela Ringuelet was honored in a very special way! A main-belt asteroid was named after her. It is called 5793 Ringuelet. This asteroid was found by the team at the Félix Aguilar Observatory in 1975. The naming was officially announced on September 26, 2007.
Adela Ringuelet passed away on April 26, 2023, when she was 93 years old. Her work helped us understand more about the stars and the universe.
