Adlivun facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Adlivun is a special place in Inuit religion. It's like an underworld or spirit world located deep beneath the land and the sea. The name "Adlivun" means "those who live beneath us." It's a place where the spirits of people who have passed away go.

In Adlivun, souls are cleaned and made ready for their next journey. After a time, they travel to the Land of the Moon, called Quidlivun or Qudlivun. This is a peaceful place where they can find eternal rest.

Who Lives in Adlivun?

Several important spirits live in Adlivun. Sedna, the powerful sea goddess, is the ruler of this land. She is sometimes said to hold the souls of the living as they prepare for their journey. Other spirits include Torngarsuk, the spirits of animals and nature called tornat, and tupilaq, which are the souls of dead people. Adlivun is often described as a cold, frozen wasteland.

The Journey to Adlivun

When an Inuk person dies, their body is carefully wrapped in caribou skin and buried. The direction their feet point depends on their age. For example, older people's feet might point west, while children's feet point east.

Inuit Burial Traditions

After a burial, family members usually spend three days mourning. During this time, they stay in the deceased person's home. After three days, the mourners walk around the grave three times. They promise to bring venison (caribou meat) to the spirit, which they then do when they visit the grave. This helps the spirit on its journey.

Spirit Guides: Pinga and Anguta

Two special spirit guides, Pinga and Anguta, help bring the souls of the dead to Adlivun. Once a soul arrives, it stays in Adlivun for one year. This time helps the soul become pure before it can move on to the Land of the Moon for its final rest.
