Adolpho Washington's Boxing Journey
Adolpho Washington started his professional boxing career in 1989. He began fighting in the light heavyweight class. In 1990, he lost a fight to K. Casimier. Later, he won a points decision against Drake Thadzi, who was known for hitting hard.
In 1993, Adolpho got his first chance to win a major title. He fought Virgil Hill for the WBA Light Heavyweight Title. During the 11th round, something unusual happened. Washington accidentally bumped his head on a TV camera. This caused a cut, and he could not continue the fight. He was losing the fight at that point and lost by a technical decision.
Becoming a Cruiserweight Champion
The next year, Adolpho moved up to the cruiserweight division. This is a heavier weight class in boxing. He defeated Iran Barkley when the fight was stopped due to cuts. He then challenged Anaclet Wamba for the WBC Cruiserweight Title. That fight ended in a draw, so he did not win the title.
A year later, he won a fight by knockout against David Izegwire. He then fought Orlin Norris for the WBA Cruiserweight Title. He lost this fight by a very close decision.
In 1996, Adolpho Washington finally won a major title. He surprised many by beating Torsten May, who was undefeated and an Olympic Gold medalist. This win made him the IBF Cruiserweight Champion. However, he lost the title in his very next fight to Uriah Grant. After this, he never fought for a major title again.
He had rematches with Norris and May, but he lost both of them. In 1999, he fought James Toney. This was the only time Adolpho Washington was stopped inside the distance, meaning the fight ended before the final round. This happened because he was bleeding a lot from his nose. His last fight was in 2001, when he lost to Vassily Jirov. After that, he retired from boxing.
