Adosinda facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Adosinda was an important queen of Asturias, a kingdom in what is now Spain. She was queen when her husband, King Silo, ruled from 774 to 783.

Adosinda came from a royal family. Her father was King Alfonso I, and her mother was Ermesinda. Ermesinda was the daughter of the very first Asturian king, King Pelayo. Adosinda was also the sister of King Fruela I.

King Silo likely became king because he was married to Adosinda, connecting him to the royal family. Adosinda and Silo did not have any children. After King Silo died, Adosinda's nephew, Alfonso II, was named the new king. However, Alfonso II was soon removed from power by Mauregatus. On November 26, 783, Adosinda went to live in the San Juan de Pravia monastery, where she spent the rest of her life.

Her Life Story

Adosinda was the daughter of King Alfonso I and Queen Ermesinda. Her grandfather on her father's side was Pedro de Cantabria. Her grandparents on her mother's side were King Pelagius and Queen Gaudiosa. They were the first rulers of Asturias.

Adosinda's brother was King Fruela I. He became king after their father. In 768, King Fruela I was killed. Adosinda worried about her nephew, Alfonso, who was Fruela's son. To keep him safe and help him learn, she sent him to a monastery. This monastery was called San Julián de Samos, located in Lugo.

King Aurelius became the next ruler of Asturias in 768. Adosinda lived at the royal court under his care. While there, she met Silo. He was a wealthy man from the Pravia area. Adosinda chose him to be her husband, which was quite unusual for that time.

King Aurelius died naturally in 774. After his death, Silo became King of Asturias, and Adosinda became his queen. They ruled together from 774 to 783.

King Silo died without any children. Adosinda then stepped in to help choose the next king. She wanted her nephew, Alfonso, to take the throne. Alfonso was the son of her late brother, King Fruela I. However, King Mauregato took the throne instead. Mauregato was Adosinda's half-brother, an illegitimate son of Alfonso I. Because of this, Adosinda and her nephew had to seek safety in Alava.

Adosinda had supported her nephew. This made her position at court unsafe. She was then made to enter the Monastery de San Juan de Santianes de Pravia. This happened on November 26, 783, or perhaps 785. She became a nun there.

It is not known how long Adosinda lived in the convent. Some historians believe she stayed there until she died.

Where She Was Buried

After Queen Adosinda died, her body was placed in a tomb. This tomb is in the Church of San Juan Apóstol y Evangelista, Santianes de Pravia. Her husband, King Silo, is also buried there. Their tomb is still there today. King Mauregato is also buried in the same church.
