About Adriana Lastra
Adriana Lastra was born in Ribadesella, a town in the Asturias region of Spain. She started studying cultural anthropology at university but did not finish her degree.
Early Steps in Politics
Lastra joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party when she was 18 years old. The very next year, in 1999, she became the Secretary-General of the Socialist Youth of Asturias. This meant she was a leader for young people in her party in that region. She held this role until 2004. After that, she became the Secretary for Social Movements and NGOs, working with different groups. From 2008 to 2012, she was the Secretary for Local Policy for the Asturian Socialist Federation.
Working in Regional Government
In 2007, Adriana Lastra was elected to the Parliament of Asturias. This is the regional government for Asturias. During her time there, she was a spokesperson for her party in a committee that dealt with justice and equality. She was re-elected to the regional parliament in 2011 and again in 2012.
Her Role in National Politics
Adriana Lastra became a close supporter of Pedro Sánchez when he became the leader of the PSOE party. She then served as the Secretary for Local Policy for the national party.
Lastra first took part in a national election in 2015. She led the list of candidates for the Socialist Party in the Asturias area. She was elected to the Congress of Deputies, which is the main national parliament in Spain. She was re-elected in the 2016 general election.
Supporting Pedro Sánchez
After the 2016 election, there was a lot of discussion about forming a new government. Pedro Sánchez, the party leader, wanted to hold a special meeting to decide if they should let another party form the government or if they should ask voters again. Most of the party's main committee disagreed with Sánchez. This led to Sánchez resigning from his leadership role. Adriana Lastra publicly disagreed with the committee's decision and stood by Sánchez.
She was a very important supporter when Pedro Sánchez decided to run for party leader again in 2017. She played a key role in his campaign. Sánchez won the election and became the party leader again. After this, Adriana Lastra was named Deputy Secretary-General of the PSOE. This meant she was the second-in-command to Pedro Sánchez. She also became the Deputy Spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Congress of Deputies.
Becoming a Key Leader
In 2018, Pedro Sánchez became the Prime Minister of Spain. The previous leader of the Socialist Group in the Congress of Deputies, Margarita Robles, became a government minister. This led to Adriana Lastra being promoted to lead the Socialist Group in the Congress of Deputies. She was the youngest person and the third woman to hold this important position in her party's history. She was replaced by Héctor Gómez Hernández on September 8, 2021.
