About Adriana Lastra
Adriana Lastra was born in Ribadesella, a town in the Asturias region of Spain. She started studying cultural anthropology at university. However, she did not finish her degree.
Early Political Life
Lastra joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) when she was 18 years old. Just one year later, in 1999, she became the Secretary-General of the Socialist Youth of Asturias. She held this position until 2004. After that, she became the Secretary for Social Movements and NGOs.
From 2008 to 2012, she worked as the Secretary for Local Policy. This role was for the Asturian Socialist Federation, which is the PSOE's branch in Asturias.
Time in Regional Parliament
In 2007, Adriana Lastra was elected as a MP for the Parliament of Asturias. This is the regional parliament for Asturias. During this time, she was the spokesperson for the Socialist Group in a special committee. This committee dealt with topics like the presidency, justice, and equality.
She was re-elected as an MP in the regional elections of 2011 and 2012.
Moving to National Politics
Adriana Lastra became a close supporter of Pedro Sánchez. He later became the Secretary-General of the PSOE. She then served as the Secretary for Local Policy for the national Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.
In 2015, Lastra took part in a national election for the first time. She led the list of candidates for the Socialist Party in the Asturias area. She was elected as an MP for the Congress of Deputies, which is Spain's main parliament. She was elected again in the 2016 general election.
Important Moments in the PSOE
After the 2016 election, there was a big discussion within the PSOE. The party's leader, Pedro Sánchez, wanted to hold a special meeting. He wanted to ask party members if they should allow a new government to be formed by another party. Most members of the party's main committee disagreed with Sánchez. This led to his resignation as leader.
Adriana Lastra publicly disagreed with the committee's decision. She strongly supported Pedro Sánchez. She played a key role in his campaign when he decided to run for leader again in 2017. Her efforts helped Sánchez get re-elected as Secretary-General.
After Sánchez won, a big meeting called the 39th PSOE Congress was held. At this meeting, Adriana Lastra was named Deputy Secretary-General. This made her the second-in-command to Pedro Sánchez. She also became the Deputy Spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Congress of Deputies.
Leader of the Socialist Group
In 2018, Pedro Sánchez became the Prime Minister of Spain. The previous leader of the Socialist Group in Congress, Margarita Robles, became a government minister. This led to Adriana Lastra being promoted to lead the Socialist Group.
She became the youngest person and the third woman to hold this important position in the history of the Socialist Party. She held this role until September 8, 2021, when Héctor Gómez Hernández took over.
