Imagine a place filled with thrilling water slides, a giant wave pool, and fun for the whole family! That's what Adventure River was. It was a popular water park located in Memphis, Tennessee. This exciting park opened its gates in 1985, offering cool relief and entertainment during hot summer days.

Adventure River was a favorite spot for many years. It was located near the I-40 highway and Whitten Road. Sadly, after more than a decade of fun, the park closed down in 1998.

A Look Back at Adventure River's History

Adventure River had a good run, but like many businesses, it faced challenges. In its later years, the park even changed its name to "Wild Water and Wheels." This new name came with the addition of fun go-kart rides, adding even more excitement beyond just water attractions.

However, by September 1998, the park closed permanently. This happened for a few reasons. Fewer people were visiting the park, and the costs to run it, like insurance, became very high. Also, the land where the park sat became much more valuable. It was simply too expensive to keep the park open.

Today, if you visit the area where Adventure River once stood, you won't find water slides or go-karts. Much of that land is now an industrial park. This means it's used for offices and warehouses for different companies. Some well-known businesses, like Johnson Controls, Terminix, Burger King, and TruGreen, have offices there now.

What Fun Could You Find at Adventure River?

Adventure River was packed with exciting things to do! It had everything you'd expect from a great water park, and more.

Water Attractions and Thrills

The park featured a sandy beach area where you could relax. There was also a huge wave pool, which was like swimming in the ocean with gentle waves. Of course, no water park is complete without slides! Adventure River had several thrilling water slides. The most famous one was called Geronimo, known for its exciting drops and twists.

Entertainment and Special Events

Adventure River wasn't just about rides; it was also a place for entertainment. The park often hosted live music concerts, featuring many talented local musicians. Imagine floating in the wave pool while watching a movie! They had "dive-in movies," where guests could enjoy a film from the water. For younger visitors, there was a special kiddie area with smaller rides designed just for them.
