Aeolus facts for kids
Aeolus (pronounced EE-oh-lus) was a special figure in Greek mythology. He was known as the king of the winds. Sometimes, people believed he kept all the powerful winds safely stored in a bag.
Aeolus and Odysseus
One of the most famous stories about Aeolus comes from an ancient Greek epic poem called the Odyssey. In this tale, the hero Odysseus was trying to sail back home after the Trojan War. Aeolus helped him by giving him a magical bag. This bag held all the strong, stormy winds. Odysseus was supposed to use only the gentle west wind to guide his ship.
However, Odysseus's curious crew members thought the bag contained treasure. They secretly opened it, letting all the wild winds escape! This caused a huge storm that blew Odysseus's ship far off course.

Aeolus was part of a large family in Greek myths. His father was Hellen, a very important ancestor in Greek legends. His mother was a beautiful nymph named Orseis. Aeolus also had several brothers. These included Dorus, Xuthus, and Amphictyon.
