Aesop Prize and Aesop Accolades facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Aesop Prize and Aesop Accolades are special awards given each year to English language books for kids and young adults. These books can be fiction (made-up stories) or nonfiction (true stories). The awards are given by the Children's Folklore Section of the American Folklore Society.

About the Aesop Awards

The Aesop Prize and Accolades celebrate books published in the two years before the award is given. The winners are announced every October at the yearly meeting of the American Folklore Society. The Aesop Prize was first given out in 1992. The Accolades, which are like honorable mentions, started in 1993.

How Books Are Chosen

Books are picked for the Aesop awards based on a few important rules:

  • The book's main topic and its pictures should be all about folklore.
  • The folklore in the book must truly show the culture and way of thinking of the people it's about.
  • The book should help readers understand folklore better. Folklore should also make the book better.
  • The book needs to be high quality, like the best children's books. It should also be very appealing to young readers.
  • The book must clearly say where its folklore stories came from.
