About the Aesop Awards
The Aesop Prize and Accolades celebrate books published in the two years before the award. Winners are announced every October at the yearly meeting of the American Folklore Society. The Aesop Prize was first given out in 1992. The Accolades started a year later, in 1993.
How Books Are Chosen
Books are picked for the Aesop awards based on a few important rules:
- Folklore must be a main part of the book's story. It should also be important in the pictures, if there are any.
- The folklore in the book needs to show the culture and ideas of the people it comes from in a true way.
- The book should help readers understand folklore better. Also, the folklore should make the book better.
- The book should be well-written and drawn, just like the best children's books. It should also be very interesting to young readers.
- The book must clearly say where the folklore stories came from. All notes and references should be inside the book.
