Affoltern (Zürich) facts for kids
Affoltern is a part of Zürich, a large city in Switzerland. It is located in District 11, which is one of Zürich's many areas. This quarter is found in a region called the Glatt Valley, known in German as Glattal.
History of Affoltern
Affoltern has a very long history. It was first written about in the year 870, where it was called Affaltrahe. In the 800s, a powerful group called the St. Gallen Abbey was in charge of this area.
Later, around the 1100s and 1200s, the House of Regensberg took over. They even built their family castle, Altburg, nearby. In 1468, the city of Zürich gained control of Affoltern. This lasted until 1798.
After that, Affoltern became its own separate town for a while. But in 1934, it officially became a part of the city of Zürich. Today, Affoltern is made up of two older settlements: Ober-Affoltern and Unter-Affoltern.

Affoltern is a lively place with many people living there. In 2010, about 22,972 people called Affoltern home. The area covers about 6.04 square kilometers (which is about 2.3 square miles).
A natural landmark, the Käferberg hill, separates Affoltern from the very center of Zürich.
