How the Museum Started
The idea for this museum came from two wonderful people, Irene D. and Maxwell Johnson. They dreamed of a place to celebrate African American art and history. They met with friends and leaders in their community. Together, they formed a special group called a board of directors. This happened on September 22, 1994.
After two months of hard work, they raised enough money. The board then rented a space from the DeLand Housing Authority. This space was about 1,200 square feet. It was located right in the middle of DeLand's African American neighborhood. The museum officially became a non-profit organization on January 10, 1995. It received its special tax-exempt status on May 3, 1995.
