Agata della Pietà facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Agata della Pietà was an Italian composer, singer, and music teacher who lived around the 1700s. She was known for her musical talents and for teaching at a special music school in Venice.

Agata was a foundling, meaning she was a child who had been abandoned and then taken in by the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. This was a famous orphanage that also had an excellent music school, called a coro. From a very young age, Agata received a complete musical education there.

Her Musical Career

As she grew up, Agata became a very skilled musician. She was a soprano soloist, which means she sang the highest parts in musical pieces. She also became a singing teacher and helped manage the music school.

Agata was a featured singer in many important musical works. She sang as a soloist in special pieces called motets, which were written by famous composers like Giovanni Porta and Andrea Bernasconi. Her name was even mentioned in their original music papers! An old poem from around 1740 also praised her and other musicians from the Pietà's music schools.

Her Compositions

Agata della Pietà was also a composer. We know of two motets she wrote. One is called Novo aprili and the other is a setting of Psalm 134. Unfortunately, for the second piece, only the bass part for the instruments still exists today.

She also created a teaching guide called Regali per Gregoria. This book was for one of her students, an alto singer named Gregoria. Gregoria was active as a musician between 1746 and 1777.

A Special Composer

Agata della Pietà was one of only three foundlings from the Ospedale della Pietà who became a known composer. The other two were Michielina della Pietà and Santa della Pietà. We don't know much about what happened to Agata in her later years or when she passed away.
