The Serpentine Assassin is the second book in the exciting Agent 13: The Midnight Avenger series. It was written by Flint Dille and David Marconi in 1986. The story is full of action and adventure, much like the popular "pulp" magazines from the 1930s. This book continues right after the first one, The Invisible Empire, ended.
The title "Serpentine Assassin" refers to Agent 13 himself. He was captured by a group called the Brotherhood. They tried to control his mind, making him forget who he was. His friend, Maggie Darr, thought he had drowned in the ocean.
Plot Summary
The ship Normandie had to turn back to New York because it was damaged. On board, Maggie Darr was very sad. She believed Agent 13 was lost in the icy Atlantic Ocean. Maggie promised to keep fighting the Brotherhood, even though it seemed impossible.
Maggie did not know that she had secret allies in New York. These allies were watching over her as she returned to Agent 13's hidden base. She also didn't know that China White had rescued Agent 13 from the water. Even though he was almost dead, China White secretly took him to the Brotherhood's headquarters.
Back in New York, Maggie thought about what to do next. She decided to talk to Kent Walters. He was a National Security Advisor recovering in the Bethesda Naval Hospital. Walters had been hurt in the first book when Brotherhood assassins attacked him and Agent 13. All other members of the National Security Council were killed in that attack.
Maggie convinced Walters to help her. He suggested she look into General Hunter Braddock. Braddock was in charge of a secret "Lightning Gun" project. He was also connected to China White, who sometimes pretended to be a famous singer.
Meanwhile, Agent 13 was brought back to life by the Brotherhood. His old teacher, Jinda-dii, told him he would be brainwashed. He would become the assassin the Brotherhood wanted him to be. They planned to send him on a mission where he would die at the end. Agent 13 fought hard against this mind control. For a short time, he felt a strange support from somewhere unknown. But in the end, he couldn't win, and his enemy, Itsu, was very happy.
Agent 13, now called Tredekka by the Brotherhood, was sent on a cruel mission. His task was to murder Maggie Darr. He was programmed to remember his brainwashing right after he finished the mission. Then, a special oil he drank, called "mantha," would cause him to burst into flames. This would give him just enough time to understand the terrible thing he had done to Maggie, the woman who loved him.
Maggie Darr did not know about the danger coming her way. She was busy investigating the disasters that the Masque group claimed to have caused. She found clues that linked these events together. This showed a pattern that no one had noticed before. It gave her hints about a new, dangerous plan that was slowly becoming clear.
